Child Psychiatry

Child Psychiatry in Raleigh, NC

Just like adults, all kids and teens will experience the highs and lows that life has to offer. While comfort, support, and understanding from family, friends, and the community can often provide your child with what they need to cope, sometimes your child’s mental health issues require professional care. Perhaps your child’s pediatrician has even recommended that they turn to our psychiatrist, Dr. Maxlyn Ellison, for an evaluation. Here at Ellison and Associates of Raleigh, our priority is to make sure that every individual that comes into our office receives compassionate, individualized mental health care.

What is a Child Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a mental health professional that works with children and teens. Dr. Ellison has received extensive training to be able to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of mental health disorders and issues in kids. Our team can help children and their families find ways to manage these common mental health challenges:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Self-harming
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Addiction and substance abuse
  • Trauma disorders
  • ADHD
  • Developmental disorders

When Should my Child Turn to a Psychiatrist?

It isn’t always easy for parents to determine exactly when they should turn to us for care, but you must be entuned with your child’s behaviors and feelings so you’re better able to assess when something is wrong. A psychiatrist is different from a therapist or psychologist because they can prescribe medications. Dr. Ellison and her compassionate team can prescribe and also help you and your child manage their medications. We understand that not all medications work the same for all kids and teens, and it’s our job to help find the right medication and dosage for your child. Your child might benefit from visiting our psychiatric team if,

  • They’ve been in therapy for months now but still are having trouble managing their symptoms
  • Your child’s pediatrician recommended that your child receive medication to help them manage their symptoms
  • You are wondering if medication is right for your child and you’d like to discuss it with a psychiatrist

Nothing is more important than finding a psychiatrist that you and your child trust. Dr. Maxlyn Ellison and her team pride themselves on having created a safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment for the whole family.
